The Museum of
T. Shevchenko ''Kobzar''

The Museum of T. Shevchenko "Kobzar"' is a museum in Cherkassy that is dedicated to the book of poems "Kobzar" ("The Bard") by Shevchenko. It is located in the house of Tsybulski's brothers . There are many rare editions of this book there. It is often called the only museum in the world of one book.

The Museum shows the history of publishing poet's masterpieces, the sources for his creativity, the most interesting publications. The evolution of illustrating Shevchenko's works is also shown there, as well as the books of "Kobzar'" translated into different languages of the world.

In the museum each edition is accompanied by the documents and materials according to the events on this or that edition. In addition, the institution is decorated with wood, that is combined harmdniously with exposition, and it just adds some cosiness and quietness to a museum's atmosphere.

Actually "Kobzar", that is known now throughout the world, wasn't formed at once. The first edition was made in St. Petersburg in 1840 thanks to Evgene Grebinka. It was composed only of 8 works by Taras Shevchenko: "Perebendya", "Cateryna" "Ivan Pidkova", "The Poplars", "The Thought", "To Osnovyanenko", "The Taras night" and the poem "My thoughts, my thoughts", that was specially written for this edition and it is an epigraph not only for this edition, but for all the works by T. Shevchenko. The publication of this "Kobzar" even censured by the tsar is still a great literary and national event.

Only a few copies of the first edition of "Kobzar" (1840) have been left, that's why the Cherkasy Museum is very proud of having one of them.

Since 2008 each year the exhibition "From the Artists of Cherkassy with respect to Kobzar" dedicated to the birth of Taras Shevchenko is organized by the local artists in the museum. In particular, in 2010 about 90 works on the Shevchenko thematics were presented. 42 artists took part in exhibition. About 50 paintings exhibited in the museum for the last 2 were gifted to the institution.
