Poplar (a legend)
A handsome and rich guy lived in this village during czarism time a lot of girls fell for him, but he fell in love with a widow’s daughter named Tatyana. But his mother didn’t want such a daughter-in-low for her son. She told him about it several times. But his reply was: "Mu“, my Tatyana is the best, white-faced, dark-browed and slim as a poplar”.
This guy planted a young poplar on the outskirts of the village. They were dating here and dreamed of building a new house on this place after their marriage. Nobody knew what had happened to them. But he led a daughter of a rich farmer to the altar. They wedding was pompous: musicians and a photographer invited from the city, three cooks were working near stoves.
Tatyana was seen near the poplar outside the village for the last time. She was hugging the poplar as if it were a sister, and she was sharing her sufferings with it. Then she disappeared from the village and nobody knew where she had gone.
This guy also didn’t find happiness with a rich wife, although her parents prepared a big dowry. They lost everything: cattle, money, property from the trunk. They had neither children nor happiness.
The time passed, a small village turned into a big one. But nobody built a house on the place, where the poplar was growing. None of the farmers could cut down this poplar. Sweethearts are dating under their branches now.
And this part of Uglovatka is called “Poplar” as a warning that it is a sin to betray love.
