The park of Decembrists
Above the Tiasmyn river flow on its abrupt right bank the park of Decembrists stretched, which in Soviet period has got the name. It is only a small piece of the big country park of the Davidovs’ estate.
The Davidovs has got Kamianka from Potemkin as marriage portion of his niece Katerina Samojlova, the widow of Rayevsky, her second husband became Leo Davidov.
On a high hill above the Tiasmyn river there was a two-storeyed house of a Polish noble Lubomirski which due to its shape resemled a castle. The Davidovs settled down in it. Around it a picturesque park was created. The row of shadow terraced lanes descended to the river. The lanes in the centre of the park were made of red grinding brick. In the eastern part the southern trees and rare plants were planted. The park was decorated with different arbours and sculptures.
Everything left from the estate is a butler’s house and a grotto. The grotto built at the end of XVIII century, is located in the slopes of the hill. Inlaid with stones the arch portal hides the small door leading to the middle. In the middle is a round brick room with a high arch and a hole in the middle. The form of the grotto resembles a huge bottle.
According to the stories Decembrists (Pestel, Muravyov-Apostol, Bestuzhev-Ryumin, V.Davidov and Volkonsky) gathered there, it was favourite (we should consider after the rock on the Tiasmyn) place of rest of Pushkin and Tchaikovsky. But as Pushkin is associated with the rock, the grotto according to Soviet attraction distribution was “given” to Decembrists.
It was restored in 1982, and now it is one of the official symbols of Kamianka.
