The Holy Trinity Church

The Holy Trinity Church in the village of Puhachivka (former Ksondzivka), Uman region Cherkasy oblast, was built in 1761. It is unique for the Cherkasy region, because only two churches of such a design (three-divided, three-topped) are remained. Once they were typical for the region of the Middle Naddnipryanshchina. Now these two churches are only in Puhachivka and Kirov, Korsun-Shevchenko region, but the latter is greatly spoilt by the reconstructions to diocesan style.

In the past the Church in Puhachivka has looked in a different way than now. In the middle of the 19th century, because of the diocesan style there was also built a babinets (a place in the church for women) and a bell tower above it, a sacristy, a place for deacons and a separate side altar, so that the church was actually converted to a cross-shaped one.

At the end of the 1980s the church was restored by workers of the Kyiv restoration workshop according to the draft that was developed by the Institute "Ukrzahidproektrestavratsiya". When restoring they tried to reconstitute the original appearance of the church. The bell tower, the sacristy, the place for deacons and the separate side altar were demolished.

However a complete restoration failed. The cause for this was a conflict with the local community about the synodal bell tower over the babinets. Apparently it was so dear to the local residents, so they demanded to construct it again. As a result, the church remained without a bell tower at all (according to the draft it should be built separately, as it was before the synodal reconstructions).
